Heat pump vs pellet stove: which makes more sense in 2026?
Italian households face a clear split: air-source heat pumps now qualify for up to 65% direct reimbursement through Conto Termico 3.0, while pellet stoves at 5-star certification still access 50% Ecobonus deductions. The right answer depends on your climate zone and existing radiator infrastructure.

65%
Conto Termico reimbursement
Direct cash refund from GSE for qualifying heat pump installations, paid within 90 days for amounts under €15,000.
€0.092
Cost per kWh with pellet
At certified Enplus A1 pellet prices of €0.40/kg and 90% stove efficiency — roughly three times cheaper than GPL.
3–5
JAZ range for heat pumps
Seasonal efficiency factor for air-to-water heat pumps in Italian climate zones — meaning 3 to 5 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity consumed.
Traditional fireplaces and wood stoves
Open fireplaces remain a design staple in Italian homes, but their thermal efficiency rarely exceeds 20%. Closed insert systems and modern certified wood stoves push that figure above 80%, while cutting particulate emissions by up to 70% compared to older appliances.
From 3 August 2026, incentives for switching from gas boilers to biomass units are no longer available under the RED III directive transposition. Replacement of existing biomass appliances with 5-star certified models continues to qualify.

2026 incentive landscape: what changed
Gas boilers are fully excluded from Ecobonus and Bonus Ristrutturazioni since January 1, 2025. Hybrid systems (heat pump + condensing boiler) remain eligible. Pellet stoves with 5-star certification and Enplus A1 fuel keep their deductions — but documentation to ENEA within 90 days is mandatory.
